On the last day of my recent two-week backpacking expedition to Southern Greenland, I woke up early to the prospect of finally finding some giant icebergs before ultimately taking the two hour boat ride back to the nearest town where we began. The light must be extremely soft when photographing these floating masterpieces or the image becomes overrun with harsh highlights. Golden hour is a perfect time to shoot. After packing up camp that morning, we boarded a small fiberglass hull fishing boat at dawn and threw on our warm fishing suits to protect us from the cold. After leaving camp, we boated through one of the more impressive sections of fjord in Greenland. Even though we were revisiting this section for the second time, we did not see any icebergs that came close to the size of this behemoth on our initial attempt. I was half asleep tucked into my suit when we came upon this floating giant. Shooting “Titan” was perhaps the best ending to an amazing trip. Luckily, our fiberglass hull was able to push through the smaller ice pieces and we never ended up needing to share one life jacket aboard between the five of us on board.

Sherbert Sea
One of the most fantastic sunrise scenes I have ever experienced. This shot was taken along the shore of Lofoten, Norway. The light pink and orange hues illuminating the mountains in the distance were some of the most beautiful morning tones one may ever see. It was a surreal moment. That morning will exist as one of those rare lifelong memories.

Senja Splash
A beautiful golden hour takes over the Okshornan mountains in Senja. The iconic mountain range is most comonly known as the Devil's Jaw. I was lucky to spend many hours at this location, resulting in a collection of images reflecting three intensely different moods. This image was a risky one to capture. The violent waves would wash up well past where I was standing. Rather than run the risk of a rogue wave knocking me over and dragging my equipment with me out to sea, I chose to quickly get a few shots composed and recompose after each high set of waves subsided.

Patient Ice
This was shot at sunrise on a cold, brisk morning in Lofoten, Norway. The early morning was stormy and snowy, so I did not anticipate having great luck for sunrise. But just as I was ready to pack up and leave, there was a burst of golden light that shot through the cloud cover and illuminated the peak in the distance. Luckily, I had already scouted my compositions and made it safely onto the ice to capture this shot.
